Last March, 2013, Canovee NS entered a schools garden competition organised by Munitir na Tire.  The team consisted of 5 pupils from 3rd & 4th class helped by Mrs Ahern, Mrs O Brien and staff. the children (Orna Mahony, Micheala Shorten, Dylan Delaney, Padraig O'Riordan & Ian Flynn). had to design a garden based on a particular theme and then create a powerpoint presentaion while the garden was developing.  The theme we chose was "Art in our Garden".  We wanted to represent our landscape in a mosaic form so we designed and built the mosaic that now hangs on our school shed.  All classes took responsibility for growing vegtables and flowers from seeds in the classroom, which in turn were transplanted to our raised vegtable plots and flowers aeras around the school.  Original and interesting flower containerswere created from recycled old tin cans were painted and planted, saucepans were filled with spring flowers, worn wellies got a new lease of life as decorative planters.  Old and discarded horseshoes were welded into 4ft flowers which were painted and lead you to our 'chillaxing' aera.  We wanted everybody to enjoy this garden so we put benches around the garden for children to sit on. Old broken hula hoops and colourful plastic windmills gave a 'Willie Wonka' feel to the garden.

After several months of hard work, our garden project was submitted to the competition. 2 inspectors visited the school in early June to inspect our garden and talk to the team about what they learned about gardening. garden design, art in our environment etc.

The final was held in the County Hall, Cork in late June 2013 and we were awarded a "Highly Commended Certificate" !!  A great achievement and we also received  a substantial cheque!!

We are now looking forward to a new garden challenge for 2014.  (photos of the garden are in the photo album on this site)
