Sciath na Scol Final 2016

Mrs Doyles Class 2016-2017

The Girls’ Sciath Na Scol Football Final.
By Aoife Downey 6 th Class.

On Tuesday 25 th October Canovee N.S girls played in the Sciath na Scol Football final claiming victory over Ballinadee. It was an exciting day for all involved as Canovee girls had not won this competition in eight years. It was a very enjoyable journey for the girls along the way, playing and beating teams Firmount, Ballinadee, and Ballyvourney before playing and claiming victory over Leimlara in the semi-final.

As the girls had played Ballinadee before in a qualifier, they had an idea of what they were like. Mrs O’ Brien was the girls’ main coach supporting and helping them along the way. On the day of the match a bus left the school with the team and supporters from both 5 th and 6 th class. Once the team were in the stadium, supporters in black and amber started to arrive, ready to cheer on the girls.
The team were led by their captain Teresa McCarthy and their vice-captain Lisa Kingston. Once out on the pitch the girls began to do warm ups and drills, before being individually introduced to all who attended the match.

At 1:30pm the whistle blew and the match started. Within a few minutes Canovee’s forward Katie Browne scored the opening point of the game. As the match progressed Canovee kept adding to the score board with scores from Katie Browne, Nicola Kiernan, Niamh O’ Conor and Lisa Kingston. The backs and midfield Donna O’ Regan Murphy, Teresa McCarthy, Grace Kiernan, Laoise Burns and Olivia Fornagiel stood strong not letting anything past them making goalie Aoife Downey’s job very quiet. By half time Canovee had managed to keep Ballinadee scoreless.

In the second half Canovee fought for the first score and they got it. There were a few occasions where Ballinadee nearly scored but it was cleared each time. Canovee again added to the scoreboard as the substitutes were brought on. Every player from goal keeper to subs fought hard and never gave up, which in the end resulted in a victory for Canovee. The final score was 3-06 to 0-0.
The girls were delighted as well as all the supporters, teachers and pupils. The team were presented with a cup and a plaque along with medals for each player on both teams. Lots of photos were taken of the winning team. When the team were ready, McDonalds in Douglas was the next stop where we all had a great time. Everyone was very proud of the girls.

The team were: Aoife Downey, Donna O’ Regan Murphy, Laoise Burns, Teresa McCarthy,  Grace Kiernan, Lisa Kingston, Nicola Kiernan, Olivia Fornagiel, Katie Browne, Niamh O’ Connor, Róisín Coughlan, Fiona Dowling, Ali Ryan, Kiera Moynihan, Elma McCarthy, Emer McCarthy, Méabh McCarthy, Molly Browne, Tia Murray, Kelly Scullane.
